Installing CentOS 6.10 in VMware Workstation 15 Pro

CentOS version

  • [root@web ~]# rpm -q centos-release
    centos-release-6-10.el6.centos.12.3.x86_64
  • [root@web ~]# cat /etc/centos-release
    CentOS release 6.10 (Final)

Step by step of installing Basic Server using CentOS 6.10 VM inside VMware Workstation 15 Pro.

  1. Download the ISO image of CentOS 6.10
  2. You will be redirected to the ISO images download link page
    • Choose 6.10 x86_64
    • You will be given some mirror links to choose
      • Choose any mirror that works for you
    • Download the file “CentOS-6.10-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso” and save it on your local Windows machine
  3. Open your WMware Workstation and create New virtual Machine
    • File > New Virtual Machine… (or Ctrl + N)
  4. New Virtual Machine Wizard will appear, choose Typical type of configuration
  5. Choose “I will install the operating system later.”
    • This will avoid the use of WMware Easy Install
      • This will give us ability to select what type of server we want to install
      • In this case, we want to install Basic Server (without GUI)
    • If you use Easy install
      • After the virtual machine is created, the guest operating system installation is automated and VMware Tools is installed
      • Server type will be automatic, and it will be Basic Server with GUI
  6. Select a Guest Operating System
    • Guest OS: Linux
    • Version: CentOS 6 64-bit
  7. Name the Virtual Machine
  8. Specify Disk Capacity
  9. Choose “Customize Hardware”
  10. Set the hardware setting to suit your requirement and connect the CentOS 6.10 ISO image
    • Memory, Processors, Hard Disk, and Network Adapter are depend on your needs and environment
    • CD/DVD (SATA)
      • Connected at power on
      • Use ISO Image file: <file directory>\CentOS-6.10-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso
  11. Review your settings and finish the wizard
  12. Power On the Virtual Machine
  13. Install or upgrade an existing system
  14. Skip the media test and start the installation
    • Next
  15. Choose “English (English)” as a language to use during installation process
  16. Choose “U.S. English” as the appropriate keyboard setting
  17. Choose “Basic Storage Devices”
    • Yes, discard any data
    • Apply my choice to all devices with undetected partitions or filesystems
  18. Configure the Network and Hostname
    • Set the Hostname and click “Configure”
    • Edit “System eth0”
      • Address: 192.168.200.110/24
      • Gateway: 192.168.200.1
      • DNS server: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4
      • Connect automatically, Available to all users
      • Click Apply
    • Click Close, and Next
  19. Another Essensial Settings
    • Select the appropriate Time & Date setting
    • Set the Root Password
    • Type of installation: Use All Space
    • Write changes to disk
  20. Select set of software: Basic Server
    • Additional software: Customize later
    • Click Next
  21. Installation process is running
    • Once finished, click “Reboot”
  22. CentOS is up and ready to be used
    • Login with your root account and password
  23. Clean up your Virtual Machine settings
    • Shut Down the VM and remove the CD/DVD connection
